Happy 4th of July!

The Fourth of July!

Daddy, Mommy, and Sophia went to Auburn for a parade!

We walked around the park and saw a petting zoo, lots of arts and crafts, a really cool train you could ride (if only Sophia were a little bit older!) and Kirby Wilbur from KVI AM 570 radio station!

Sophia also got a flag and spent most of the day waving it back and forth as mommy and daddy pushed her in her stroller!

The Point Defiance Zoo

Today Mommy took me to Point Defiance Zoo! It was such a warm, sunny day -- it was perfect for strolling around and looking at all the animals!

Monkey!

Another monkey...

Monkey... er... Adorable Sophia!

Can you see the Tiger?

Starfish (Mommy doesn't like sea creatures too much)

Mt. Rainier!

Sophia also rode the carousel, but then was so pooped out she napped all the way home (with the AC blasting in the car, of course!)

What a fun day at the zoo.

Puyallup Farmer's Market

Today Mommy took me to the Puyallup Farmer's Market!

Geez, momma! You gonna follow me around with the camera all day?

The farmer's market has wonderful plants, organic vegetables, great food,
and lots of handmade stuff!

Beautiful bouquets on display...

Don't I look adorable in my new hat?
(It's a yellow flower with a stem and a leaf at the top!)

It's Official - She's Growing up!

My little Sophia is growing up.

I knew it was going to happen, and it is bittersweet.

I can't wait to see her take her first steps or say her first sentence. I see her making progress everyday - she's working really hard at crawling (she can get up on her hands and knees and rock back and forth), she babbles up a storm (she usually has to give me a run-down of her day when I pick her up from daycare), and has a second tooth coming in on the bottom.

She is reaching for the spoon when I feed her babyfood and drinking by herself from a sippy cup. She can also feed herself biter biscuits.

Her hair is coming in and she is getting tall!

Although she will grow up, she will always be my baby.

What's Good to Eat?

Since Sophia is starting to eat more and more "solid" foods (well, baby food), I've been really wondering how much to feed her. I don't want to overfeed her... but a jar of baby food seems like so much for such a little tummy!

I sought wisdom at two "baby food maker" websites, Beechnut and Gerber.

The Beechnut site offered a very "general" menu that is actually very helpful, because it allows the parent to be creative and determine what foods they feed their children.

Here is a suggested menu from Beechnut:

Breast milk or formula – 24 to 32 ounces in five to six feedings, fed with meals or in between

Morning
Prepared cereal (½ cup)
Fruit (2 ounces)

Mid-Day
Meat (1 to 1-½ ounces)
Vegetable (2 to 4 ounces)
Fruit (2 ounces)

Mid Afternoon
Fruit (2 ounces)

Evening
Dinner (4 ounces)
Fruit (2 ounces)

The Gerber site offered in-depth menus by week, that were too extensive and detailed to list here, so I've provided a link to their menu plans for the "supported sitter" or babies who are eating the 2nd stage Gerber foods.

These helped me determine if my baby was getting the right nutrition, and hopefully it will also help parents who are beginning to feed their little ones solids!

Something Beautiful About Her

Trust me. I do not consider myself beautiful. Nor graceful.

This morning alone, I managed to almost drop my cup of Oatmeal at the company cafeteria, flinging brown sugar and raisins all about the floor and into various bins holding chips and snacks. After picking out all of the raisins from the cafeteria displays, I went up to the check-out counter only to be laughed at by the cashier because I had brown sugar all over the front of my shirt.

I've tripped over my own damned feet at least 4 times already and it's only 1:30 PM. I "almost" spill my soda at my desk at least once a day.

But something miraculous happens at times I least expect it. Last night, I put Sophia down to sleep around 7:30 PM, and I heard her wake up crying about 8:00 PM. I went and got her from her crib and sat down on the couch. She was clinging to her favorite stuffed elephant, Eleanor. I cuddled her in the crook of my arm and whispered to her how much I love her. I wiped away her tears. I told her how beautiful and sweet and wonderful she is. I gently kissed the top of her head until she fell asleep, and after that I held her for at least another 20 minutes, cuddling her and kissing her.

At that moment, I was beautiful, and graceful, and warm. And I was made that way because of my sweet wonderful little baby girl, my gift from God, and because God has moulded my heart into that of a good mommy.

The Good Baby Blessing

Today Miss Sophia and I went over to Andrea's house. Andrea is the leader of a women's Bible study group. A bunch of really neat women meet regularly on Tuesdays, which just so happens to be the day that Sophia's daddy has shift at the fire station.

So today, Sophia came with mommy to the women's bible study group... and she was soooo good. She was very quiet and not very fidgety, until it got to be way past her bedtime, then she got a little fussy, but mostly just started babbling and rolling around on the floor, which luckily the other women found endearing.

At one point during the meeting, a lady was saying how she keeps things hidden in her underwear drawer, because she knows her husband won't look in there, and right after she said that Sophia let out a very loud giggle, and the whole room laughed. We wondered what Sophia found to be so funny!

She fell asleep in mommy's arms and was an angel on the way home... going right to sleep the minute mommy put her down in her crib.

What a blessing this dear little angel is to her mommy. How lucky her mommy is to have such a beautiful, wonderful baby girl.

Walking in a (Winter?) Wonderland

Today mommy, daddy, and grandpa decided to take me for a walk near Huckleberry Creek. We got in the car and drove and drove through the forests, and after a long bumpy road, we arrived at a creek!

Daddy had a special backpack that I could ride in. I was up higher than daddy's head and could see everything!

When we got to our trail, mommy and daddy were disappointed that there was still a lot of snow on the ground! They decided to walk for a little bit anyway. Mommy kept stepping into really deep snow and falling down, but daddy did just fine. I broke a branch off of a tree and hit him on the head as we walked along. I sure thought that was funny!

We ended up heading back early since it was still so snowy. Mommy and daddy said we would come back later in the season when it was warmer and the snow was melted.

Then we went to see Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I didn't pay too much attention to the movie because I wanted to put my hands in daddy's popcorn. The more I heard him rustling around in that bag, the more I wanted some too!

Eventually I fell asleep during the movie, and when I woke up we went to have dinner at The Keg! I sat in a high chair like a big girl and daddy let me have a tiny bit of bread. Mommy had brought along a teething biscuit for me (because I like to eat, too!) but I dropped it...

I was a good girl the whole day! I never cried even once (until we got home and I had a little bit of a tummy ache).
